Curious - answers please.

Last year I hatched some pekin bantam eggs in an incubator and all 3 that hatched were cockerels. I was really fond of them so I kept one ( I have only one neighbour), kept one at the school where I work and one was sadly got by a fox. My friend says she will get her husband to dispatch the unwanted cockerel chicks and I think some people eat theirs.

Going by what I have read on other forums...

despatched and disposed of

Raised for the table

given to local farms or other poultry keepers who want them

Taken out and just released

kept and put in low dark box at night (sometimes under stairs or in cuboard) to prevent early morning crowing

Sold to pet shops as food for snakes etc

I am sure the list is endless

I had a cockeral years ago, and he was put in a dark box around 6pm till aroun 9.30 am, it worked fine, my neighbour and I loved to hear him crow during the day so we were happy, don't know about the rest of the neighbourhood tho

hadn't really thought about bring a cockeral indoors during the night what a top idea :D

It doesn't always stop them crowing...even the merest chink of light will set them off. They have to be put in a low box so that they can't extend their necks to crow.

Some consider it cruel.

Also....they don't just crow once to greet the dawn...they crow all day long,

Not conducive to good neighbour relations if you live in a cul de sac.
