compliment slip, what do you think?

Recommended Posts

Brilliant Poet! I must try something similar next time I give eggs away. :)

I was over at a friend's house last night and picked up the latest Waitrose magazine, only to find an article on BHWT. They really are everywhere at the moment!

Apart from the stickers that we put on the egg boxes, Rosie (who is Egg Business Manager) has the following letter that she wrote to slip in with the eggs, it also shows some photos of our hens and some ex-batts:

As you know, I have been giving away any excess eggs we have to friends and family, and I want to carry on doing this because everyone likes our free range eggs so much.

After being invited to help at a battery hen re-homing by Jane Howarth of the Battery Hen Welfare Trust, I would like to help the charity more by donating some money earned by our ‘free hens’ to the BHWT.

I will still give our eggs away for free, but if you would like to make a donation every now and then towards the BHWT, then I will make sure that they get it.

I want to help them to continue re-homing ex-battery hens, which would otherwise be sent to slaughter for pet food or pies. Please do your bit by voting with your shopping trolley and only buying free range or organic eggs and chicken meat, this will encourage the farmers to use more humane and healthy methods of farming.

See their website on www.bhwt.org.uk

Thank you

Rosie

so all in all a good idea then? Just need to change the wording slightly and include the URL for the BHWT.

I think I will add also that they are a charity and rely on donations and then if people wish to donate they can do so. I need to keep it short and sweet as it's only compliment slip sized

Thank you for the comments, it always helps to get feedback.

Medusa, I'm so glad you might do something similar!:lol:

The other thing we could do is insert a slip saying

If you have enjoyed these eggs, laid for you by hens who have been set free to feel fresh air and sunlight on their faces and through their feathers rather than life behind bars in a battery cage and feel you would like to make a donation to help free more battery hens, please log on to the BHWT ....

..or something along those lines.

Its great to think that people are becoming much more aware of where their 'food' actually comes from and how it is made!! :D

You just know when you are doing the right thing when your 7 year old little boy asks a waitress if the mayo in his lunch is made with free range eggs! So proud!

Troy :D

I've recently set up a group on facebook to list eateries in my area that serve/use free range eggs http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=42090875386&ref=mf it's also a good excuse to visit them to do a review ;)

Great compliment slip Poet - Peta always try the shock treatment, even if it isn't true (we've had lots of bits from them that my daughter has been sending off - mostly stickers and some horrible pamphlets). Abbey road girl - I had problems downloading the link, but it worked this afternoon, so it might be that lots of people are on the web at the same time - have another try later. :)

Hi Koojie Bear, tried again but no luck. Peta began as a reasonable and admirable animal welfare organisation but seems to have been taken over by a more extreme element. I was very unhappy to read on their website (GoVeg) that eggs were very bad for you because of cholesterol--this is not true.

Poet is right to explain the conditions under which our (?) eggs have been produced (at least I'm guessing since the link hasn't worked for me). My hens are fed on organic layers pellets (80% of their diet) and have a run which allows them reasonable space for scratching and exposure to natural light. They free range one to two hours a day (usually in two sessions) and are given treats which are healthful.

The more we can explain the differnce between what is sold in supermarkets and what is available from us hensters, the better.

They are given periods of light and dark to mimic night and day, this happens 2 or 3 times in a 24hr cycle to encourage the hens to lay more than once in 24hrs. I think that is right, if not please someone correct me.

I believe this to be an urban myth. They do have artificial light that is constant in its period to maximise laying. IE it does not have shorter 'days' as occur naturally in the winter
