I attended a police safer neighbourhood meeting tonight. There were also people from the council and journalists. Held outside near to Sidcup Station. Must have been about 100 or so people. The police had no microphones, megaphones etc. Trains, buses, cars etc were going past. We could hardly hear a thing. They should have thought about the venue a bit more.

 

They wanted to know what we want done - more police out there would be one thing. Apparently they stop and search already. The Metro Bar has had a license meeting today and will not be reopen until Monday. They will be having a 25 ID procedure in place. The evil person that did this to Rob, Andy, Nick and Dean will be remanded in custody until the beginning of September.

 

According to the police we live in the safest part of the borough - glad I don't live in the worst part!!

 

I'm glad they realise that us normal people are scared and didn't just ignore us. I think they have a hard job and they certainly had a hard time from some of the crowd tonight.

Zero tolerance policing was introduced in Middlesbrough by Ray Mallon who later became mayor.

 

He was nicknamed RoboCop at the time as his methods were extraordinarly effective.

 

By targeting and prosecuting known criminals for everything and anything, and throwing the book at kids for minor offences to discourage would be criminals, he achieved a crime rate drop approaching 30% if I recall correctly.

 

The criminals didn't get time to do anything serious as they were too busy getting done for more trivial stuff.

 

The 'do-gooders' had their way and he was sent packing, accused of corruption and not being lovely and nice to scumbags. Apparently he cut a few corners.

 

He did score a political victory by being voted in as mayor though.
