Strange thing in Poo Tray

Recommended Posts

Firstly, apologies if this is in the wrong section, I was not sure where to post it.

I have just found something odd in the poo tray, it can only be described as resembling a mucusy blob of orangey colour jelly, almost like a blood clot (sorry for TMI)

All other poos were fine and the girls look perfectly well; eating, talking, clear eyes, clean bottoms, charging at the run door when they spotted me, thinking they could come out in this rain.

I have checked on here and the only thing I can find is that this might indicate that an egg is due shortly, but what I found in the poo tray did not match the photo on FAQ, so I wanted to check if it could be something else.

We have had them 4 weeks this Friday.

Thank you in advance for any advice :)

Nutmeg - not able to help, but glad you posted this as I have just come in from cleaning poo trays and found the same! I have had my birds about 1.5 weeks and they are not yet POL, and I had wondered if it was some sort of pre-egg thing. All my birds look fine and I can't identify which one it has come from.

oo oo I know this one!! :D

Absolutely freaked out when I saw the same the other day(have only had the girls since friday) and thought they had some rare and unheard of condition !

However, I found it in a book that said it is apparently normal to see an occasional orangeyred mucusy thing that is expelled from the lining of the gut. :?

Maybe someone else will be able to tell us all exactly what it is but I do know it is nothing to worry about. I know blood in poo is NOT to be taken lightly though.

Too obsessive  . No such thing :shameonu::lol: .

I know I know  It is just that I visited Wisley Gardens on Saturday with my teenage daughter and when we entered the shop I turned to her and said "Keep your eyes peeled for anything chicken related" and she replied "Mum, don't you think you are becoming a little bit obsessive about chickens"

Many thanks to everyone for their help, sounds like what I found is nothing to worry about.

In Omlet's booklet that you get with the Eglu they explain that a perfect poo is brown with a white crown, I now often find myself pointing out "textbook poo's" that I find on the lawn to my family. No-one else seems quite as impressed/fascinated/interested as me. Or maybe it's that as I'm the only one who cleans them out I spend a lot of time studying the variety of colour/texture! (Must get out more!)

This is a bit of a relief to me too. I saw the same sort of thing a couple of times and was fretting that it looked nothing like it was supposed to. Being a very new comer to all this, I could fret over lots of things but it is great to see all the advice and experience on the forum. Thanks people :D

an odd strange poo is perfectly normal, mucusy as you discribe & also you can get frotthy ones too  as long as it ie an 'odd' one its fine.

Just be more aware if there is blood or they are a runny green, it may need looking into, & it is on more than one occasion.

Out of interest have your chooks been wormed?
