We have decided to get rid of the low fence in our front garden and plant a hedge instead so I'm after ideas as to what would be best - had no idea it would be so tricky - I just thought a hedge was, well ....a hedge:?

 

Am ideally looking for something that will end up around 1 metre tall, nice and bushy. Will be in the shade most of the day.

 

Any suggestions please??

I have planted a beech hedge. Looks stunning in the summer with green leaves and brown leaves all winter.

 

You can but them very cheaply as bare rooted plants to plant in the autumn or spend a little more as potted plants to plant anytime.

We got some rose hedging mail order from Victoriana Nurserys.

Its been in about 3 years now. Im a little dissapointed with it. Its still quite low, only about 1/2 a meter. It was advertized as grow tall quick, grows anywhere and that we could use the hips for jam etc. I think must grow anywhere but my front garden.

Funny, I hadnt had it down for an inhospitable climate!

We use Buckingham Nurseries for any hedging. We've always had healthy trees, delivered promptly. As Christian, beech would be a good hedge for you.

I love my beech hedge - the chickens love it too - but it is 7 foot high and 5 ft wide! Its very old - I think it would take some time to grow such a monster. Mine is mostly green but I love the red (?) coloured leaves.

 

The chooks love scrabbling around under it for bugs - although some of the leaves stay on a lot fall too and I leave them under there for the wildlife - which unfortunatley annoys the neighbours a bit when its windy....
