Guest
The co-op do outdoor bred pork sausages with the RSPCA freedom food label on them. I bought some outdoor reared pork sausages from my local farms market. Does outdoor bred mean they have been reared indoors do you think? I think the labelling is very misleading. Lesley
There is a long running thread over on River Cottage about supermarket labelling such as this The thread over there is more to do with Waitrose advertising pork as a particular Rare Breed but putting in the very small print that the meat is 'sired by' a rare breed......... which means it is bred from a commercial pig. With the Co -op i would think that bred should mean that the animal has been outdoor reared but it isn't very clear is it Is there any very small print ? Sunshine
M&S do outdoor bred ham which when we brought it i presumed it was reared outdoors and theyjust had a funny way of writing it. But i looked it up on the net out of curiosity and it means that the pigs are bred outdoors but when they are a certain age they are taken into sheds. Its very misleading. The Dogmother
I'd assumed the same Sunshine. Taken literally it leads you to think that they are conceived outside - no more. I'd also like a proper translation of the terms.
little chickadee
My mum's cousin is a free-range pig farmer. His pigs are bred, born and raised outside. The reason that a lot of pigs are "bred" outdoors is that mother pigs who live outside are healthier with much more muscle tone, so they don't need help with giving birth. If pigs are just "bred" outdoors, they are then taken away and reared in sheds
The Dogmother
So not much difference from 'battery pork' then really. What I suspected I shall continue to buy my pork from the farmers' market or friends, where I can be sure of their treatment. Thanks for clarifying that LC
Guest
right, won't be buying any more of those sausages then. Terrible labelling, most people wouldn't think to question it would they! They see the word 'outdoor' and think 'free range'

Janty
My mum's cousin is a free-range pig farmer. His pigs are bred, born and raised outside. We have talked about this before haven't we? Isn't this Blythburgh free-range pork?
little chickadee
That's right Janty the very same. I was so thrilled when read ages ago that you buy Jimmy's pork.
