jomaxsmith
My girls are helping me eat up my organic veg box before I go away next week (dh is away and kids are veg phobic - perhaps I should have cancelled the box ). The girls have so far munched the chinese leaf and savoy cabbage and have a grubby looking lettuce and some courgettes to come. Today, however, I decided to try them with Aubergine. Interested noises at the prospective treat turned to slightly worried clucking as they saw this big black thing in my hand and then turned to outright terror as I rolled it into the run! This was about 3 hours ago and they've been pinned to the far end of the run ever since! If they don't get over their fear soon I'll have to move it or they'll starve! It's probably the most expensive veg I've ever given them and it could well end up on the compost heap untouiched! Snowy
I can just imagine their terror! Why not peel and lightly cook it? Bet they'll eat it then!
Chickvic
ROFLMAO That has amused me so much I've had a mad coughing fit and it took me at least 5 mins to calm down! I can picture it so clearly!! Son now thinks I'm completely mad! I hadn't been too good today and now I feel great after all that laughing. Thanks
Seagazer
I second that Chickvic - I've got tears falling down my cheeks My husband was just talking about getting me psychiatric (sp?) help as I was explaing to him about having Butch on my lap and talking to her. Now he definitely thinks I do after reading him this thread!! It so funny

Cyber Chook
It probably looks like a huge alien egg to them Caroline
Reikiranf
That had me in fits of laughter too. Perhaps they don't like competition! Aubergines are also known as egg plants Must admit though, haven't had much luck with getting mine to eat veg They've turned their beaks up at purple sprouting broccoli, lettuce, cabbage, spinach, tomatoes, peas & carrot peelings
Abbey Road Girl
So funny -- aubergine, the veg from outer space! "Just when you thought that it was safe to wander round your run..." Your chooks might not thank you, Jo, but it's done a world of good for the rest of us!

superjules
Jo - you crack me up! Bet they'd scoff it down if you cooked it.
jomaxsmith
When i went to check them this morning the aubergine was still untouched so I broke it into pieces (didn't realise how tough those things were until i tried breaking one up with my bare hands!) and after a committee meeting whereby Daisy was voted chief taster they have now started eating it. I didn't realise how fascinating chickens would be! Jo
Ain't Nobody Here
That is so funny . I love the way they're scared stiff of anything being chucked into the run .... "look out . It's another alien apple core . Ruuuuuuuuuuuuuun ."
