stoobie
Hi, Ive just recently ordered my eglu and am waiting for my chucks to arrive. I noticed a lot of you keep a record of when your chickens lay eggs and how heavy they are. My question is - how do you know which egg came from which chicken? surferdog
Mine all lay slightly different colours - Coco's are always dark brown and she lays like clockwork day in day out, Sylvie's are pinky beige and she always has a good crow to let you know she's laid, Hyacinth's are brown and speckedly and HUGE. Took a while to work out who was laying what and sometimes it's not obvious until you see them all together. Process of elimination really! I think the only sure way is to have breeds that lay different colours.
Egluntyne
I wish I knew! I can identify about 5 of my hens as having laid particular eggs, because the eggs have distinctive characteristics such as shape, colour, size etc....the rest lay identical beige eggs....so they are anyone's guess. stoobie
Phew - I thought it was going to be something really obvious that I was missing! I will have a lot less chickens than you have Egluntine mind - hopefully it will be a bit easier! Stu
E4eggs
I have two ex-batts, a Gingernut Ranger and a Miss Pepperpot. Sometimes I know the Miss Pepperpot's egg 'cos it may have a black feather stuck to it - dead give away! If it doesn't then ????
Chickvic
I can tell the difference between my girls eggs because they are quite clever and make them slightly different! Opal lays the generic beige egg, Pearl's are quite a bit paler and Ruby helpfully puts white 'paint splashes' on the end of her egg!
Stevie
My Gingernut lays a large pale brown egg while the Pepperpot lays a slightly smaller darker brown one.
frenchlayer
And you thought an egg was an egg. See mine too. All different, well three are different and one is the same.
Cooks
My Coral (white hen) lays light cream and the black rock lays a light brown egg. I thought it would be very ahrd to tell the difference but I think they felt sorry for me and decided to make it easy by laying different colours. Mine dont lay very big yet though.. late 40g's with the occasional one going over 50 mark and one double yolker which was about 63g I believe. AJuff
Well Daisy's eggs are white and Hilda's are khaki green so their easy to tell apart. Delia and Darcy both lay brown eggs but Darcy's are pointy and Delia's are more rounded. I was confused by the blue eggs layed by Hazel and Hermione although they had a very different finish. One is very matt and the other shiny. I'm afraid to say I watched the nest until I found out who laid each egg
superjules
Daffodil - beige supermarket-style eggs Sylvie - slightly orange-beige eggs Magpie - pink tinted torpedo eggs (can't tell one end from the other!) Yoda - matt blue-green eggs, Yaddle - shiney olive green eggs, Bumble - small shiney creamy-tinted eggs Yum-yum - small shiney peach tinted eggs Bossy - small matt cream-tinted eggs Now and again I get confused by a Sylvie/Daffodil egg, but other than that it's quite obvious!! (They all have reasonably specific weights to give you a clue too!)
Abbey Road Girl
The two most distinctive eggs mine lay are the most gorgeous deep terracotta egg which looks polished to perfection and the pale bisque egg which looks scorched on the end. By the way, which end comes out first, the blunt or the pointy end?
MedusA
Scully lays pale beige eggs Toffee lays beige round eggs Treacle lays brown torpedo eggs The Silkies aren't laying yet so I have no idea what their eggs will be like.
melly264
one of my poor hens is still being sprayed purple to help stop feather pulling but that does mean that her eggs generally have a little purple on them which helped us tell the difference at the beginning We have good weights from them, Annie (the purple chicken!) lays the smallest - bout 60-65, Duracell big brown one 65+ and ginger huge white ones - nearly always 70 or above. Is it useful to have some kind of record of frequency and size so that you can tell a decline and which for health problems? I have a memory like a seive and wonder if I would notice if someone hadn't laid for a few days
The Bantam of the Opera
i can tell because the bantam eggs are tiny and the other.s aren't.
hennymom
we cheated we watch ours on chuck tv...we have a camera facing into the nesting box so we can see who lays and when... we also have one looking into the run, so we can see what the little rogues are up to..... I kept all my girls first eggs and hopefully will get round to decorating them sometime!! otherwise we would'nt have a clue except only one shouts to the world she has laid,
