riger11
Can anyone tell me if cheddar cheese is harmful to chickens. Jane stole some of my cheese sandwich yesterday when I wasn't paying attention and ignored the bread and she and Hetty and Rosemary went barmy over the grated cheese and even came back to me demanding more from what was left! today when I had a sandwich they came back looking I think for thew same. I think they realised it wasn't cheese and went away. I have had three other chickens before these (Cagney and Lacey and Thyme) and they never had any. Jane and Hetty are relatively new and young and the first to have it

chocchick
Once will be fine. The only problem would be that it is fatty so not suitable on a regular basis. Some people don't feed dairy as chickens supposedly can't digest it. I feed live yoghurt and I'm currently sneaking in a week of yoghurt and wormer as they love it (don't tell them)! Lailapet
Cheese should not be a problem as such! I believe chickens are actually omnivorous but I think it's wise to feed them proper chicken food as the main diet and treats in moderation. Mine seem to eat just about anything as long as it's grated or chopped small enough for them - tomatoes, finely grated carrots, the odd bit of leftover lasagne (yes, mine have small amounts of meat, after all they eat insects, snails etc) but as I said, only little bits and actally only if they have not been out free ranging that day or as a bribe to get them back in the eglu before they would take themselves to bed. Basset
Mine have s"Ooops, word censored!"s of cheese fairly regularly and have never shown any ill effects. I have no concerns at all about feeding them cheese.
Laura & CTB
Mine get a sprinke of grated chedder on top of their pasta every once in a while
Karen Pimlott
cheese is fine every now and again, we feed it as a treat to our show birds every so often, i usually cube the bit that goes hard on the end you know the bit i mean if its in moderation (once a week) it wont do any harm at all cheese butties all round then K
riger11
Thank you all for your reply. I think as a treat I will let them have it now and then. They certainly went barmy over it. They also like pomegranate seeds. As my hens free-range all day it the treats are sometimes the only way to get them back in when I want them back in the coop. Aren't they wonderful creatures! So full of life and each one with its own character. I never regret having started with chickens back in 2004
Ange1
You're all making me hungry for a sheese sarni! All that's in the fridge (at work) is a boring salad from Boots! It might have some grated cheddar on it though?! *rushes off to check*
