I collected 3 ex bats on Saturday. Today I noticed one of the eggs had blood on it. Lucky (poor choice of name it looks like) has blood on her bottom, and it looks odd. I have an appointment for her with the vets, but the rescue people think it is a prolapse and I will be told it is best to have her PTS. I feel so sad. Poor little girl.

Thanks Jules. I just hope I haven`t left things too late. I have really left them alone to settle in, and just sat by the run and talked to them. Today is the first real free range day, and Lucky hasnt come out.

I had better get her in the box for the vets.

Sorry to hear about poor nugget. Prolapses can, on occasion, be treated well enough to prolong the life of the hen - normally, believe it or not, with good old Preparation H! I've used it with some success in the past, but it really depends on how badly affected the chicken is, and if they have been pecked.

Fingers crossed for poor Nugget. xx

Well, Lucky is still with us! It isn`t a prolapse, thank God. It is trauma which is swollen and dying off. She has had anti biotics and anti inflamitories. She has to have more anti biotics twice a day for 10 days. The vet thinks she will be OK. I am crossing everything for her.

She was such a good girl. She stood still and let me stroke her. Thank you all folr your good wishes. It looks like it worked :D

Pleased everything is ok. I must say that i think it was wrong for them to automatically advise you to put her to sleep if it was a prolapse as my mum has had to deal with this before and although not particularly pleasant, it can be treated relatively easily and they make a full recovery quite quickly.

Anyway....pleased it's not that and little lucky is ok.

P.s Aren't ex-batts just the best?!!

I would have made sure she had treatment and was not just put down Mummy. I was doing quick calculations of how much was on the old credit card to pay the bill  I had a quick read up on prolapse before I left, and I saw there was an op that could work, and even neutering. Maybe the rescue is more used to dealing with things going wrong than me?though?
