Stevie
They're self regulating and will only eat as much as they need.I always make sure they have enough for atleast that day,but i allow it to run right down so the food at bottom dont go stale. andrewandcarly
i bought a 20kg sack of organic pellets a week last saturday and i would guess i have about 5 kg left. that is for 11 hens. 4 ex batts and 7 others. not sure how much that equates to each but it does seem like they are hungry!!! *mummy_hen*
Ours eat quite a lot, but i just believe they will eat as little or as much as they need as each day the amount left in the grub will vary from nearly nothing to a quarter full!! I wouldn't worry too much, it isn't like you are feeding them corn or anything that could be fattening so it will all be doing them good! Janty
I am really paranoid about my girls. I had to take Sporty to the vets and the vet said that she was a little underweight. They get herbal wormers each month plus flubenvet three times a year. I constantly have their feeders topped up and they get warm layers mash porridge with marmite and cod liver oil each morning for breakfast. I don't want fat hens but a little more weight would be good. The vet said it's probably because they are getting so much exercise but you know when somwone sows a seed in your mind. Ain't Nobody Here
Once they're laying, they to seem to turn into Hungry Horaces . I wouldn't worry, as long as it's mainly mash/pellets, it's good for them .

Egluntyne
Laying hens don't tend to be as "meaty" as hens raised for the table. Their bodies are geared to be doing other things. Mine eat a huge amount. a 20KG sack lasts 3 weeks.
Hen Watch
Mine eat a huge amount.a 20KG sack lasts 3 weeks. Blimey..... My 4 chooks use 1 x 20kg sack of pellets per month.
Phosphorus
My 20Kg bag is starting to look empty again - I think that is 3 weeks - so my 7 chooks are probably eating a sack every 3.5 weeks Only 2 of them laying as well, but then the rest are all about to start so their food consumption does seem to have gone up now
