abwsco
Hubby decided to empty one of ours as it had a lot of flies in and was rather smelly depending on windy it was. He was very surprised to find it had lots of dead flies in it but also live maggots :vom: Needless to say it wasn't emptied. It's all been got rid of and so have the rest of them. Would rather have the odd fly than risk that happening again. Has anyone else had this happen?
Egluntyne
I just remember the unbelieveable stench when I emptied one last year. It made Ukadex smell positively fragrant. I couldn't look at an Eccles Cake for weeks.
..lay a little egg for me
Oh yuk! I wonder if, when it gets too full, the dead flies rise up above the water line so living flies can lay eggs on them which then hatch out? Perhaps they need to be emptied sooner? I was thinking of getting some of these, so would be interested to hear of others' experiences! If they have found the same problem, I won't be purchasing any! Well, we didn't think they were too full (still only a third full) but saying that it was just black that you could see and then of course maggots when you got right up to it
UkButton
Yep happens all the time. The eggs the flies carry hatch in the fly trap... better in the trap than in your garden though.

hasnett
does anyone have any tips for keeping flies at bay in the first place? sx
abwsco
does anyone have any tips for keeping flies at bay in the first place? sx You can use Citronella oil I actually think I panicked myself into buying them. We did have quite a few flies when it was warm but then chatting to my next door neighbour she did as well. She said they seemed to be attracted to one particular plant in her garden. We had warm weather again last week and didn't get lots of flies in the garden this time.
Tottya
Laughing soo much at Eglutine and the Eccles cakes comment soo funny I just brought these last week and whilst making up the powder and water mixture the powder that attracts the flies really really really stinks quite bad.... I work in a hospital so my nose is quite used to whiffs especially with 2 young boys too!! So they must smell bad. Can't say I have noticed a drop in fly numbers, and as you say the flies are around only on hot days and are sitting on any exposed Poo droppings around, so to combat this I simply have a poo pick up session twice daily, nothing I love more than getting my pink marigolds on and getting a carrier bag filled with poo for freinds gardens I woudn't bother buying them again in a hurry. StephanieSB
It is near time for me to empty out our FliTrap -- what do you do with it? Dump in down the toilet? dig a pit in the garden (thought that might actually attract flies to that spot of the garden, so decided not to)? What to do with it?! Can it go into the compost, my husband wants to know?
Egluntyne
I emptied mine onto the compost heap. Be warned, the smell is truly awful and quite unlike anything you will have ever smelled before. Gloves and a facemask drizzled with Olbas Oil are a good idea.
abwsco
Probably very bad of us but ours have each gone into carrier bags, then another, than another and to the tip.
