Abbey Road Girl
Miss Pepperpots are also known by other names but I've drawn a blank on what they are! Will one of you lovely and helpful all-knowing types step forward please? This would make it easier for hybrid chicken shoppers (people shopping for Pepperpots, not hybrid chickens pecking in their pin numbers). Thank in advance! theherd123
Are they known as Black Rocks?
Gamebird
I believe they are also known as Bovan Nera.
Gallina
Pepperpots are a Bovans (with an s) Nera. Its a Dutch bird, a straight cross between a Barred Plymouth Rock hen and a Rhode Island red cockerel (according to the internet).
Stevie
I think the most commonest name is Blackrock.
Cooks
yep Black Rock, I have one (Cocoa) she's a lot darker in her colouring than yours Sue, but that's the nice thing about this type their colourings are so so different. My youngest choice Cocoa becasue she's so petrol blue on her back.. she's only really brown on her chest. I would have to spend a lot longer in your garden to be able to tell yours apart.. they confused me which ones where which..
NClaire
They are like Black Rocks, but I would be surprised if they really were - the Muirfield Hatchery is very protective of the Black Rock breed and name. There are lots of similar types of hybrid - for example the brown Omlet hen is very like the Isa Warren, the Isa Brown, Bovan Goldline. The Miss Pepperpots seem to be like Black Rocks, Bovan Nera - or many other names - Merrydale Copper Black being an example of a 'breeder's name'. But I don't think you could call them Black Rock without it coming from Muirfield, or being one of their 'recognised' stockists.
Egluntyne
They are just different names for similar types of "crosses" with individual breeders creating their own "brand". Snowy has a chart describing many of the "crosses".
Cooks
Funny because my breeder called Cocoa a 'Road Rock', but I googled and asked on here and was told she was a black rock/miss pepperpot.. so that's what I call her.. If I put Road Rock in my profile, no-one knows what she is so this is clearer.. maybe I should put a disclaimer beside the name just incase.. *We call her a black rock, but maybe she's not so dont take offence, we are just pleasing two children who like to call her this* ....something along those lines.? My boys prefer to call her a black rock rather than a miss pepperpot, as they feel that name Miss Pepperpot is too girlie for them. In all honesty I dont believe it matters that greatly, I am not hatching from her!
Abbey Road Girl
Thank you, everybody! I asked this on behalf of someone who hasn't been able to track down any Miss Pepperpots. The name could be exclusive to Omlet! Omlet says: "Miss Pepperpot is a modern hybrid and is the result of a Rhode Island Red crossed with a Maran and a Plymouth Rock." (It's a rare bird that has three parents!) Lynsey, as the mother of three sons I can understand why your boys prefer Black Rock --publishers of children's books know that girls will identify with both heroes and heroines, but boys won't! Road Rock? Sounds like something to avoid while driving! Or a new kind of music...
