Angels4
Sorry for my ignorance, but I had never heard about "bokashi" before joining the forum and ordering my Eglu. I googled bokashi and here in the States it is used as a compost accelerator (japanese fermented grain) is this the same thing you have in the UK? Christian
Hello Angels4! yes, exactly the same stuff. Keeps theirs poos firm and stops them smelling as much
Ain't Nobody Here
Yup, same thing . Really helps with the poos!
Angels4
Thank you Christian and ANH I will have to get some then. Do I just mix it in with their feed and is there a ratio of bokashi/feed you suggest?
The Dogmother
I just bung a handful in the feeder when I pop the feed in. They seem to eat it. Over here, we can also get layers mash with it already mixed in.
Angels4
Thank you Claret. I will check with my feed supplier and see if that is an option here as well.
The Dogmother
The supplier I've found here is http://www.wigglywigglers.co.uk it's nice 'bitty' mash too
Ain't Nobody Here
I just bung a few big handfuls into the box I keep their pellets in. I don't think you can overdose them on it .
JamesH
They like it a bit too much, flicking the food all over the place with their beaks to pick out the bokashi bran!
wombatally
How often do you give them their handful of bran? I'm having to start a diary of when to flubenvet, red mite dust them etc!
Ain't Nobody Here
Mine get bokashi with their pellets all the time as it's mixed up with them.

I wouldn't worry too much about it - I'm not very strict about dosing and stuff like that. They get Bokashi in their feed every day Wormed twice a year Lice preventative twice a year Inspections when I remember
HENthusiastic
I've read that this also neutralises the poos and makes them less acidic so they are better for the soil. I'm a bit confused though, because don't some people give natural apple cider vinegar to help make the gut MORE acidic to deter worms? So would giving the bran make them more prone to worms? JamesH
I thought Bokashi Bran was acidic on enter and exit but quickly neutralises after it exits doing wonders to the poo at same time.
