SOMETHING got Roxy INSIDE a locked run

Recommended Posts

ok so i had a closer look the gap where the dropping tray meets the eglu and there is quite a gap. there was also a little blood there so i think thats what happened. I have lined the inside of the eglu with bricks so my three girls can't snuggle up the the edge to keep them out of reach of little claws (thanks for the tip Claret) and I have made a rough wall of heavy rocks and stones around the outside of the eglu to create a barrier in front of the gap. I have also pinned down the run with rocks. I don't think the rocks on the outside are much of a barrier for a determined predator but at least I will see where they are trying to get in. The eglu door is firmly shut, my outdoor light is staying on, my foxwatch is on order and I've got everything crossed!

good luck girls!

sorry to hear about your girls esta thats horrific, what would one fox want with 18 chickens?

Kayte - glad to hear that you've taken precautions. You might like to check that your eglu sits evenly.

maybe someone should feed these design issues back to omlet themselves?

Johannes popped round to look at mine after it happened to me - it's not a design fault; as I said earlier, if the eglu is on slightly uneven ground, then it gets out of kilter and the back lifts up more than it should. Coupled with a daft bantam who loved to sleep right in the dip at the back, it was an unfortunate set of events.

I'm so sorry this happened to you and your chook - it's what we all dread!

My cube and run are permanently sited and, although it's supposed to be fox proof, I've put tent pegs all the way around to make it a bit harder to push up or move (hopefully!) Not sure if this would help your current problem, but it might make things a bit harder for predators.

Really sorry to hear about the attack. I know that it is not much of a condolence but I would like to thank you for posting it as I have just had a look at my eglu and it is on uneven ground so will be taking precautions that I hadn't thought of before. Hope that your safegueards work for the rest of your girls.

Obviously this thread was on my mind last night.

I was awoken just before 1am by an awful noise which sounded like something being predated. I leapt out of bed and rushed down to the girls run, but to my relief, found they were all safely tucked up and wondering why I was waving a torch around like a mad thing. Phew!:roll::roll:

Glad you had an uneventful night, Kayte. :)

oh no i didn't mean to give you nightmares! I've probably made everyone a bit paranoid now...

:anxious:

I'm installing my foxwatch this afternoon - it'll be interesting to see if it has any effect

I'll keep you posted!

not necessarily a bad thing if it leads to improved chook safety ;)
