MikeK
Hi All - I want to get a couple of chickens but live high up in the Pennines on the side of a hill. The garden is big enough but it is quite sloped - no real flat spaces at all. So a request for some advice please ... Can I keep an Eglu on a slope? Or will the ladies keep faling off their perches? Thanks in advance
mrs chook
Would it be possible to dig a piece level and make a permanent site for the eglu on the level? Landscaping? Then the girls can wander up and down hill as well.
MikeK
Thanks for the reply Mrs C - that would certainly be one way round it - but do I need to keep moving the Eglu around to stop infections etc?
mrs chook
I don't think so necessarily. As long as you keep it clean inside the eglu and maybe woodchip the run area or something so that you can rake through and change surface as necessary. Is it quite steep?? It would certainly make the eglu and run more secure if it were on the level I think. Is there an area near your house you could put it on level-ish ground? Ain't Nobody Here
Welcome to the forum, Mike . If you built a permanent run, you can easily leave the run there as long as you follow some rules for keeping it clean. I have my run on soil but lots of people put theirs on slabs. Hemcore or Aubiose are really popular for putting in the run - they both absorb moisture and poos magically disappear! Clean out your run every 6 weeks or so, rake off the top layer for your compost bin or flowerbeds, dig over the soil, sprinkle some Stalosan F and garden lime down, put down new Hemcore or Aubiose and you'll have no problems with infections or smell . Hope that helps .
