What would you say are the best breeds for egg laying?

Recommended Posts

Decisions decisions, you are right, there are so many lovey breeds to choose from.

Warrens are a nice bog standard ginger hen which are very good layers.

Black Rocks are, nor surprisingly, mainly black, friendly and good layers.

Bluebelles are gorgeous to look at.

I could go on and on.

Have a look **here** for more info.

Yes, I went to get a White Star for that reason - white eggs too......but, when I got there I saw Willow an Amber Star and just couldn't resist her. She's the friendliest and funniest of my hens. Can't comment on the amount of eggs for any of them though, still waiting............

My Cream Legbar is in her first year of laying.

She lays 6 eggs a week, weighing around 56g. :D

Wonderful blue shell.

Once you start it's completely addictive, I orginally choose different coloured chickens, now I'm adding different coloured egg layers to them.

Hi I choose my chickens for egg quantity too. They were from Merrydale poultry in Leicester I got a Ranger who started laying this week and have had an egg everyday! Also got a Merrydale copper black which is equvalent to a Miss Pepperpot which also is a very good egglayer. Check out what Merrydale has to offer they have a brilliant website and they are very helpfull to first time chicken people! The lady who runs it knows more than vets do about chickens they quite regularly phone her up for advise apparantly!

Good Luck

oh she's gorgeous, she's like Egluntine's isn't she?

mine lay every day and I have a Coral (white bird) and a Black Rock type. They occasionally have a day off, but I cant blame them, it sometimes follows or is before a larger double yolk egg I have noticed.

Their eggs are yummy in my tummy as well. :D

I got a Rhode Island Red hybrid from a place in Cheshire. She started laying at Easter and has had one day off! She lays 70g+ eggs. She is very friendly and easy to handle.

I got a Black Rock type from the same place. She's not a bad egg layer, sometimes has 2 days off a week though, and her eggs are a little smaller, usually less than 60g. She is more jumpy and not inclined to be picked up, but will eat from my hand.

I have plenty of eggs for my needs. If you are inexperienced at chicken keeping I would look for a breed that is easy to handle.
