velcro strips for door conversions?

Recommended Posts

I bought just a roll of Velcro strip which you can cut to size, on eBay. Havent' tried it on the run yet (I've just ordered my extra arch this morning :) ) but they are quite tough, and I think as long as you have several then it's fairly unlikely that they would all come loose. I've used them to good effect to tie back my climbing rose.

Also, I'm following the design suggested by Egg Lou in the 'sticky' on here, where the Velcro ties are used at the top of the Cube run. A fox couldn't reach them to chew at them, unless he/she was actually on top of the run.

I am sure dog clips would do just as well (for me it was just that they would have been too quick to open with respect to young children whereas velcro tabs wrapped round several times and in several places may slow kids down enough for me to spot what going on - silence in small children always arouses my suspicions!!!!). Not sure how many dog clips you would need - I would reckon on 5 - 3 spaced along the top and one at either side to stop any major gaps.

I guess you could use the plastic "snap hook" keyrings.

For example, TOWSURE.COM sell them. Pack of 4 for 99p.

Not looked for better price and no idea of quality of the TOWSURE ones.

Have used similar as keyring before though and they're fairly hardy.

Update : Just had a quick search and found similar thing. 10 for £1.50.

Is this a missed business opportunity?

Should I have put all my money into selling plastic snap hooks that would be available in all the colours of an eglu / cube?

:D:D:D

Any day now, Omlet will see the light and start selling something suitable (one hopes).

Are the Omlet run clips in the shop really any different? They look just the same:

Don't you think the person who has done the review may have forgotten how good the clips are when they are used first time round?

I am not brave enough to do a conversion yet, because I would not trust Velcro. The foxes in my garden tear things to shreds, and I don't think Velcro would stop them.

Gallina, the advantage with the door conversion where it 'flaps down' from the top is that a fox couldn't reach the strips. Believe me, I'm not underestimating their wiliness and determination, but even standing on their hind legs they couldn't reach the strips on top of the run - and they'd have to chew their way through several. I'm absolutely confident that they are safe, but having said that, I find them very fiddly and I'm looking for snap clips just to speed things up.

I am a bit disappointed with the door conversion, not the idea as a whole, but my arch came without any screw bolts to attach it at the bottom, I would have ordered them if I'd realised it came without. Also, the front of the Cube now gapes a bit - it doesn't match the shape of the arch. :? I expect it needs a bit of fiddling with, and I haven't had time, but it's not quite as straightforward as I'd hoped. It does beat trying to reach through that Alice-in-Wonderland door, though.

I got fittings with mine - might be worth phoning Omlet.

With the Velcro straps you can wrap them round several times which should help deter foxes (I only do this if I am not around as it makes it more fiddly to open). I have also found that if any gaping Olly then placing a velcro strip where problem is and then wrapping it right round the leg adjacent piece of arch solves this. Hopefully with a few tweaks you will get things to your satisfaction and won't have to go back to playing Alice in ChickenPoo land!
