bokbokbok
My back garden is divided between 2x2 horrible-grey-but-practical-flag-stones and gaps in them which we call the flower beds. I inherited the garden like this and never really liked it but never came up with a solution until now. I have decided that there is a lack of grass in the back garden (plenty in the front but that isn't chook friendly) and am thinking about lifting a staggered area of 27 of the flag-stones which will divide the garden up a little more and give a little texture to what is quite drab looking. If I lift the flags there will be a recess to fill with top soil which I don't have. I will then have to seed the whole area. And then wait for the grass to come. And then do some praying for non-patchiness. If I go to B&Q I can buy turf for £2.48 a square meter. Or. 50p a square meter for the dying off and left lying without any sunlight for too long stuff. SO. Experience anyone? If you were asking me whether you should buy the reduced plants for 50p I would shout NOOOOOO at you because I know a dying plant will never be any good to you. But I don't know about grass. There may be the possibility that this stuff would be great in a couple of weeks - and if not it would give me the depth to then throw grass seed on to anyway. Buy? Or steer well clear?
Tessa the Duchess
We have recently re-turfed our lawn after the chickens destroyed it We used rlt turf which is extremely hardwearing and has very long roots so it can withstand drought better than regular turf. I would avoid the cheap stuff, once grass roots have died due to lack of water and light they may never grow back, it is very hit and miss. Better to buy the more expensive stuff and have an instant, good looking grass area. You have to water new turf every day if it doesn't rain. bokbokbok
Tessa, thanks for taking the time to reply - we accidentally ended up at B&W again this evening and the 50p stuff was gone - although I know it will reappear in the future due to the nature of turf being sold in places like that. I think you are right - I'll take my time and do it right - although it is now very unsettling to be in the garden and stand on the flags now knowing that sometime it may be green grass! Egluntyne
Have a look on Freecycle for some topsoil to fill the gaps before turfing.
