New Girl
My 22 month old has just "fed" one of my chooks her elastic hair band, I couldn't get to it quick enough and Fred ate it! I'm sure this could cause serious harm - what should I do?
Egluntyne
Chocchick is the resident expert on hens eating hairbands. One of her girls had a penchant for them. I seem to think it reappeared eventually. I would just keep an eye on her for the next day or so.
Paola
How big was the hair band? Usually nature has its way of dealing with such things.
michele
My hens seems to have a rubber band fettish. I use a rather heath robinson arrangement for closing their large run area which involves elastic bands, but if one ever drops into the run they race for it and fight over it for ages before swallowing it. I have tried to grab it from them but to no avail - they are very detiermined. Anyway, in answer to your question, it doesn't seem to do them any harm - the next day their poo comes out with a clear runny colour. Steph101
I suppose the worst thing that can happen is the next egg comes out looking like John MacEnroe.
foreveryoung
hummmm who'd be the lucky person who finds the hair band in side their egg??
New Girl
Thank you everyone, glad she's hopefully not going to be affected by it. I have to admit I did think about it coming out inside an egg!!!
koo2cat
That is so weird as this evening one of our girls was running round the garden with what I thought was a worm, on closer inspection I realised it was my 2 yr old daughters hair elastic that she had pulled out. All the other chickens were chasing her and it was really funny to watch! DH managed to get it off her before it was consumed!
New Girl
We've had a softee this morning could this be the cause?
The Dogmother
It might be. I wouldn't worry too much - mine are always eating stupid things and have survived so far. Just keep a weather eye on her for a few days.
beach chick
I just read the title as "help - just eaten a HUSBAND", which would clearly be a more significant problem!!!
Paola
I just read the title as "help - just eaten a HUSBAND", which would clearly be a more significant problem!!! or getting rid of the problem, depends on the way that you look at it
