Patridge bantam chicken poorly foot?

I bought a metal bin today to store the hen food in. Can someone advise whether i should just empty it staight in or do you put the food bag in the bin?

I put the feeding bag in the bin.

 

I also secure the lid with a luggage cord.

same, the bag doesn't totally fill the bin so i can also put the garlic and the oyster sheel in there. Bungee cord over the top.

Well I had planned to put the bag in as it was, but before I got the chance, DH had tipped the whole lot in. It actually makes sense, I guess - easier to mix in a different brand if you switch, and there's always going to be spillage down the side of the bag (like with cereal packets!). the pot of grit and the dried mealworms just sit on the top with the scoop. If anyone can think of a reason we shouldn't be doing this, please say so asap!

we put the bag in, along with all the other chicken related bits, then when the bag is nearly empty I take it out, put the new one in and tip the dregs of the old on the top (I try to remember to open the new bag first )

I just tip mine into a plastic bin then I can mix in garlic, poultry spice, diatom etc etc - makes it easier in the morning!!

I keep mine in the bag - in the lounge

 

Luckily everyone that comes to our house knows what a loopy old bat I am

 

I'm still looking for a nice feed bin - most of the ones I've seen look like dustbins!

I bought lovely cream coloured ones from the laundry department in IKEA. They look very smart for £10.

I've got a turquoise plastic bin, with those metal clips so the lid can be fixed on ... but it lives in the garage, so the colour doesn't matter too much.

 

I put the bag in, I always fill the sweetie jar (which is what I use to mix limestone, garlic etc in) over the bin and then any loose bits fall back down the side. When the bag's nearly empty, I take it out, tip the bin up and shake all the loose bits back in.

 

I always try and mix a bit of an old bag, with some of the new bag, in case they taste different so it's not too much of a shock to the girls.
