Yolky
I just did leeks and carrots for our tea and cut up the eelings and just gave them to the chooks like that....is that right or should I have cooked them? Also just saw that there were three big s[latty poos on the shower curtains covering the run....made me glad that they were there or the poo would have just gone into the run
jomaxsmith
If they'll eat the peelings raw then why not? Much more natural and eco friendly than cooking them! Mine won't and I refuse to cook them so they go in the compost. Bird poo is a pain - I recently got some off the handle of the Eggport onto my hand and thence onto the egg I picked up. I didn't know quite what to do and in the end I think I cooked the egg for the hens to have as I didn't want to give it to a human. Bird poo is also a reminder why we need to worm our hens and check for parasites - they don't live in a sterile environment! Jo
Hen Watch
If they will eat raw ... great. My lot are getting fussy in their old age. They used to eat carrot peelings raw but now turn their noses up at them. But if the children have leftover cooked carrots on their plates the chooks snaffle them up. So I would stick to raw to make life easier (with the exception of potato skins which must be cooked).
beach chick
um, I kind of think bird poo goes with the territory... if any eggs come out of the eglu a bit grubby I just let them dry and then brush the dirt off. I never wash them, and tend to subscribe to the 'peck of dirt' theory!!!
