Patridge bantam chicken poorly foot?

Recently when I've been emptying the poop tray I've noticed some small jumping flies I can only assume are fleas (about 2-3 mm in size). I've checked my 2 chickens and they don't seem to have any on them, any ideas what these are?? I didn't think fleas were attracted to chicken poop!

 

I opened up my compost bin today and low and behold there's loads of them in there too, once again on the poop!!??

 

I've given the eglu a good scrub, but no doubt they'll be back again soon.....

Ones in the compost bin are fruit flies. Read it recently. Sorry dont know anything about chicken ones.

Yep! Fruit flies. I've had these in the compost for a few weeks and noticed a few in the eglu for the first time today. Planning to give it a good clean every day until they go away. Horrible things arn't they.

Thanks for the info, didn't realise they could be fruit flies! Do they definitely jump like fleas then?

 

The flies in the eglu & compost are definitely the same.

I had the same and cleaned out and put in red mite powder into the eglu tray as its strong smelling and they have gone away.

Thanks for posting that question! I have been worrying about the same things! I also have checken hens and chicks but no bites/scratching/lice but on the coop and in the poop there are loads. I am buying some Diatom powder now which should prevent most types of lice/fleas etc and if mixed with food will also be good to prevent worms too. And its completely natural too as I am trying to be oh so Organic!
