pat
Hi all, I will be posting questions all the time when i get my eggcube in a couple of weeeks time. I haven't ordered the chickens cos i really need some advice. I want my chickens to be friendly so we can stroke them so they are real pets.what type should i buy? I plan on starting with 4. I have always had cats but never chickens but judging by this site it seems as though they are very addictive.
Willow
The hybrids that Omlet supply are friendly - particularly the gingernut rangers. If you are in their delivery catchment area the driver talks you through what you need to do and clips their wings etc. It's a nice easy way to get started then you can add to them later. BTW worth browsing arounf the forum more - best place to ask ques is in 'Chickens' I'm sure a mod will move this soon.
Egluntyne
Welcome to the forum pat. Whilst you are waiting for your cube why not have a browse of the **FAQ section**? It is full of info especially helpful for new hen keepers.
whittlewitch
Welcome Pat, We got 3 hybrids from a local supplier (Up north so Omlet don't supply the chucks), they are a gingernut ranger, a blackrock and a blubell, they are all really friendly, the more we handle them the better they have got, but they were never unfriendly just hard to catch!! Ali B
Welcome to the wonderful world of chicken keeping. It is utterly addictive - I started with 4 hens in July, and have already got 4 more! I started with 4 Bovan Goldlines, a pretty standard red hen, with white feather tips and fluffy bums! I think that there are all types of other similar hybrids (I've had Meadowsweet Rangers in the past, which I think are pretty much the same.) The word "Friendly" doesn't do them justice - it is sometimes hard to get away from their loving attention! They want to be wherever you are, be that in the garden or the house, and are happy to be stroked and cuddled. They are also brilliant layers. Enjoy! jools+6
hello . we got 6 black rocks . read the books and they seemed the hardest to kill they are also excellent layers , although three are still layabouts who eat all day and dont do much else apparently they are good first time hens to get , sex linked so not much chance of cock-a-doodle-dooing , hardy and resistant to parasites (touch wood).... so far they have been a breeze . i have no plant life left in the garden , they sneak into the house (they like tv) , they mug us and visitors for food (love ice cream by the way) and are generally lovable thugs that love to dig holes for us to fall into !! and they're scared of mollie the rabbit enjoy choosing ! chickenanne
We've 4 chickies - 2 pure breeds (light sussex and rhode island red) and 2 hybrids (blackrock and bluebell). The RIR and Sussex are easily the tamest, calmest and boldest. I would absolutely recomend either breed - hardy, good layers, great temperament, etc. And wierdly less inclined to broodiness than the hybrids, but this could be luck!
