new chickens

Recommended Posts

Hello, welcome to the forum :D

I don't have any experience of other breeds, but I have a Omlet Pepperpot and Gingernut and also an Amber Star. They are all absolutely lovely. Very friendly and surprisingly quiet! I think it depends on the individual chicken as well though.

Although a lot does depend on the individual hen, I have found some breeds less friendly than others. Our columbines/skylines are stroppy, unfriendly and don't like being handled despite the fact we've handled then from being young. Our new girls are the total opposite, they want to be very near us when we're in the garden. Friendly and calm - so i would say get an Amber star/Link or a Sussex Star.

what is the quietest and most friendly chickens (in general) for a domestic garden. We don't want to upset the neighbours with too much noise! Any advice would be great, cheers

My noisiest girl is our most smallest. Little tinker she is.

Shes a perfectly round lavender Pekin that lays 5-6 days a week. But Lord help us if one of the other girls is nesting in 'her spot'. She stands in the cube and yells at the top of her voice until they either lay or leave!!

We have 4 large girls with her that bow to her every whim. Even THEY cant stand the racket.

Mine are all fairly quiet .. although my Suffolk Blacktail ( also known as columbian?) can have her moments... she does a long wail whenever she sees us near a window and also has a grumble first thing in the morning..

My Bluebelle is really quiet unless a cat or similar appears then she can shout for england..

The Amber Star, Freckles doesn't bok or cluck but honks like a trumpet but not loud at all.. just very funny!

Actually the chicks are the noisest as they cheep all day long!

I don't recommend the Speckledys, ours can be quite vocal. She announces the fact sometimes that the others have laid an egg. She's not laying at the moment, and we don't want her to now!! cause we bet she'll be noisy!! She's friendly but you've got no chance if you want to stroke her, she runs off and goes nuts!!
