alexgirl73
I have been asked to consider taking on 4 six year old warrens ( I do cat fostering for the CP and one old lady needs to rehome her chooks as well as her cats). I've been told they are warrens (sp?) and are still laying! Does anyone know anything about this breed and is it possible for them to still be laying at 6?? Oh and while I was on holiday the last 3 weeks, unfortunatley we lost Hepzibah. She was the one that had had a funny cough and sneeze since we got her a few months back. At least I know she went happy and well cared for. RIP lovely girl
HENthusiastic
HIya. Sorry to hear about Hepzibah. I believe that warrens are one of the many terms used for the bog standard (but none the less beautiful and wonderful for it) ginger hens. Similar to the ones Omlet provide and also similar to the types that are used in battery cages. I have two ex-battery girls and one girl from a breeder who I believe are all warrens (or isa browns). The ex-batts lay well, most days and the one from the breeder is my best layer. I have no idea how long they would lay for though. I would be suprised if they are laying daily at 6 years old, but I'm sure somebody who knows more than me will be along soon with more info. alexgirl73
thanks for that. Anyone else know?
Egluntyne
My ex-batts are Warrens. TBH I'd be surprised if the hens in question are doing much laying at 6 years of age.
alexgirl73
that's what I thought I'm now torn between wanting to help out in this situation and wanting chickens that are young and will lay for a long time. I'm also worried that if they are 6 then taking them on and introducing them to my girls would be too stresful for them and lead to a premature departure iykwim!!
