chooklady
Blossom the Bluebelle spent an hour in the nesting box yesterday as reported in the chicken section. Today I pulled out the poo tray and there was a softie! Poor Blossom. There was a perfectly formed little yolk. Can't wait for the next one, Let's hope that one is perfect" Is this normal for young hens and is there anything I should add to their diets so that it doesn't happen again. I have some oyster shell is there anything else I should do?
Hen Watch
Don't worry - girls new to laying will lay the odd softie. I only add extra calcium if my old girls have a run of softies. The odd one I don't bother. She will still be getting into the swing of things. I do ensure that my girls always have a pot of mixed hen grit (which includes soluable shell) even though they free range lots.
