Autumn
Hi everyone, I've not been on here for a while but I thought I'd update you as to how me and my hens are getting on. We bought two warrens to start with back in April and after a few weeks of getting to grips with poultry keeping we thoroughly enjoyed it! My husband had built a small wooden hen house and run which has been great. The hens have got used to our cats and dogs and we can even let the dogs into the garden with them which we never thought possible! In fact, I think the dogs are scared of the chickens! (or more likely scared of the telling off they would get if they touched them!) So, as the demand for my free range eggs keeps growing at work, we decided to increase our flock. My husband built me a new bigger wooden house and run and my parents hatched some buff orpingtons so I have four of those, we think two maybe cockerals and two are hens so I will keep one cockeral and two hens, hopefully sell the other cockeral when he's ready. The buffs are lovely, so placid and friendly. My parents also rescued some day old chicks from a breeder who was going to sell them for reptile food as they weren't the right colour! So I have four of those now, two are alot younger so are in the original small house and run being kept separate until they are old enough to be introduced to the others. These four are bantams, and they have lovely markings, the feathers are laced and they are very pretty. So we've gone from having no chickens in March and thinking the dogs would kill any we owned, to now having 10 and the dogs are behaving! I absolutely love keeping hens, they are so friendly and I can sit and watch them for hours. Even my husband who wasn't too keen at first loves them now, although it's too good an excuse for him to get out of any jobs I give him to do by watching them all day! Sorry, a bit of a long useless post! x
Scramble
I think that's great! Chicken Keeping is very addictive, although I don't have my own yet I still can't stop talking about them. Those chicks Good job you where there! You're a hero, well done I hate to think of them being used as reptile food...
redfrock
Sorry, a bit of a long useless post! x Not at all - it makes fascinating reading . Glad to here you flock has expanded so beautifully. I'm sure most of us intend to start with only 2 or three and end up with a flock-ful! I know we did! Husband is desperate for sime Buffs, having seen some at the breeder we go to. Maybe next time! PS that breeder with his day old chicks needs shooting
