sandyhas3chucks
was wondering about wing clipping versus predator etc. my 3 ex bats can do no more than flap up onto a sofa, howere my rescue can fly much higher. Am wondering how high in general can a hybrid fly & do I need higher protection for my & my neigbours veggie patch?!
chelsea
one chicken we had flew on top of our caravan roof once! and that was with wings clipped. I think it depends on the breed type and nature of the bird, some birds you will notice immediately are "flightier" and more nervous than others. Heavy birds are fine. Looney
Our two gingernuts can fly over the omlet netting quite easily, although this isn't very high (sorry rubbish with dimensions!). They have clipped wings. They haven't yet succeeded in getting over the 6ft garden fence though!
sandyhas3chucks
o oh!!!! better get some trellis only 4ft on one side. though they will be safe, her veg might not be... nor mine come to that.
mrsallen08
I think you need to be looking at 5-6ft fencing at least with wings clipped. They also jump from one thing to another which can be an issue if your coop/eglu is next to the fence!
Mutrix Farmers
Katie (Bovans Nera bit like Miss Pepperpot from Omlet) can jump 3 feet without really flapping her wings that much. She once flew from the top of the run, over the omlet netting and landed in the garden over a distance of 6 feet from take off. And yes she has had her wings clipped! dancing cloud
4 of my ex-batts can get on the Cube roof, the other 2 can't and just walk round whingeing till I put them up there I've never tried clipping their wings, but so far they've not got over the omlet netting into the veg patch. How's Hennie doing by the way?
sandyhas3chucks
Watch tis space... hoping mine are like dancing clouds... Any clever /interesting reason for the name by the way?
Gamebird
Only one of my 6 girls has managed to fly over the electric fence netting (3' 7"). I then clipped one of her wings and she has since been a good girl and stayed on the fox safe side of the fencing. I think it depends on each individual chicken and their personalities and you have to adjust accordingly.
dancing cloud
No really clever or interesting explanation, but to answer the question:- Dancing Cloud comes from a story my dad told me when I was very little (when dinosaurs roamed the earth and we all lived in semi-detached caves etc ) about the white fluffy clouds that dance with the sun and the stars that dance with the moon, and how they all dance around the earth in time so that we all get to see one or the other. The earth is safe and protected by the never-ending dance (and every now and then the moon gets naughty and stays up late so it can get a peek at the sun, so sometimes you see them in the sky together). An easy way to explain night and day to a toddler, and the image of a dancing cloud stuck - always said I'd call my sailing ship that one day (maybe next lifetime ). This is the only place I have it as a user name, but I'd got bored with the usual dull name and felt safe among friends to roll it out here. Still hoping for Hennie ...
