chelsea
Help! am at my wits end with Ella and my pecking maran. Ella has sterile peronitis so she has swollen undercarriage. My maran pecked the swollen under carriage some time ago and caused it to bleed, after a lot of care and attention we managed to get the area to heal and to scab and look good again. Now the she has taken up to pecking again on the swollen area despite us covering the area with gauze and surgical tape and purple spray (vet said this was a good idea to keep it covered - which it has been for several weeks). Have been out in garden today and watched the maran craftily peck off several layers of gauze and tape to get at swollen area to peck at it. I dont know what to do? Im thinking of pants now. Will Ukadex spray really work? Not in the best of moods as I fell down the stairs last night and tore all the ligaments in my already sprained ankle, so I cant be doing with pecking chickens! chelsea
thanks for the idea, but im not sure as she isnt feather pecking and never has, she is just pecking skin/scabby area and pecking off the gauze to get to this area as she knows its there.....im wondering if a bumper bit would work for this? Egluntyne
Oh heck Chelsea. Sorry to hear about your tumble. Tee Tree Spray tastes vile , if you can't bring yourself to use the Ukadex. It might do the trick. It is antiseptic too.
chelsea
thanks, im going to get some Ukadex. Does anyone know the best/quickest online deliverer please?
suzi
I bought some Ukadex,it worked for a few days, then I had to spray twice a day .I have never smelt anything so vile, had to shower and wash my hair after each spraying. A kind member from here sent me some bumper bits and its worked. One of mine was moulting and one of the others was pecking her so badly, she had open wounds, woudlnt come out of the hen house ,wasnt eating. I had also used Purple Spray which lasted a few hours as it covered up the blood and wounds. I honestly wish i had used the bits weeks ago for the sanityof my picked on hen and the added stress that I have gone through also. The Brown Clan
Glad the bumper bits working for you suzi wish thay did for me , neither did the anti peck spray, purple spray or the ukadex!! or the assortment of thing to keep them busy i've now left them to sort it out themselves as no blood is drawn they just like the taste of feathers and have bald backs!! as don't know what else i can do tbh!! Chelsea, merrydale poultry is the cheapest and its next day delivery bit steep at 7.95 but its still at least 5 pounds cheaper than everywhere else , as suzi says it stinks so be prepared for it and the smell clings forever !!!, hope it works for you know how frustrating it is
Egluntyne
**Regency Poultry** sell it as anti peck spray. Give them a ring....they are very helpful.
chelsea
thanks all. The ukadex should be coming today. This is the last chance saloon for my maran, we have the bumpa bit on its way and the ukadex - if that doesnt work she is going...so fed up with it. Ella is wearing a pair of my nephews pants today (with hole cut in for vent access), just to protect the wound until the ukadex comes, as whatever else we use to cover the wound my maran just rips off.
