Pecked and Bloody

Recommended Posts

I've been to shut the girls up after they put themselves to bed after a wee bit of free ranging round the garden.

I found Izzie sitting in the dark on the bars, in the corner, nestled right beside Buffy - which is strange as Buffy (if she notices Izzie) would be the one prone to pecking her. My thoughts were "Ahhhh, that's nice of you Buffy!"

There was something *not right* about the way Izzie was sitting - with her head hanging low so I took a longer look. There was a darkness to her comb. You may remember her comb isn't quite as full as it could be.

Finally I had to put the light on and found her comb had been bleeding, the blood had been wiped on the back and side of the shed and it looked like the blood was still flowing.

Now. . . I have her in the kitchen, cleaned up, clucking as the dog if he dares to come in, merrily scoffing down some mixed corn (tut! AFTER SHE BRUSHED HER TEETH!) and sipping on water with a dab of honey in it. She is FINE!

I am worried about the blood (we couldn't get the congealed bits off her comb) attracting more pecking in the morning though.

We don't really have quarantine quarters and I would prefer not to stick her on her own but I am worried enough to take your advice on the matter should you have an opinion. . . any thoughts?

(I think she is quite happy to move in to the kitchen though :D )

Can't get any before we leave for work but will ask the vet for some today.

Izzie was fine in the kitchen - behaved perfectly - roosted on the side of the box all night, bottom OVER the box so all poos are in the Hemcore! How polite is THAT?

I fashioned a mask out of kitchen roll and sprayed her with Savlon antiseptic - but it didn't stain as well as the purple spray would have. The small amount of blood that is left is very dried now and looks black.

I have put her back in with the rest and no one seemed to take any notice of her. She'll be there a full half hour before we leave for work so I will have another look in a minute to see how they are behaving.

My theory is - her comb shows a history of being pecked so I reckon she is used to it.. We CAN put her in a run inside the run if there is any sign of more pecking. . .
