Talk to me about Bantams!

Recommended Posts

I somehow managed to buy myself an Eglu on ebay :D and want to get some Bantams. It has the regular run plus the converter... How many Bantams would be happy it in? They could free range for a bit each day, but they'd need to be in while I'm at work etc as we have foxes locally

I'd also appreciate any opinions on differnet breeds of Bantam - i want a selection but just need to have a few possibilities along with pros and cons for when I go mini-chook shopping!

Are bantams ok with the standard grub and glug feeders? Is there anything else I need to consider?

Thanks in advance guys!

I've got four pekins, all different colours in a cube with extension. I personally feel that four is plenty if as mine are they're in there all of the time. Pekins are really docile and very friendly. They don't make much noise and mine are good layers in the spring and summer months.

Having experinced other breeds I'd definitely recommend them. Finding some was my problem I had to travel a long way!

Good Luck

We have a lovely lavender pekin bantam in our flock - very pleasant friendly bird, and pretty fearless - has no problem standing up to the larger chooks we have - my son (9) is already planning to have an enclosure full of this breed when he is grown up and has his own house! They don't lay much though, but their small eggs have high yolk to white ratio which are great for baking.

We also have a lovely mini silkie, which is a good size to go with a pekin - gorgeous white fluffy feathers. but...as a breed they are very hard to sex and many people find they have a cockeral - we did, but have been able to keep him as we are semi rural and our neighbours are fine with him. This breed do not lay many eggs (especially the cockerals!!!) but are lovely funny looking creatures.
