kirbyhouse
Hi All, As you can see from my sig I have had my girls for a while now and still besotted For the first time my seem to be going through the moult. Not had had any eggs from Popcorn for several weeks but apart from that there were no signs of anything until about a week ago. Feathers everywhere! She still seems happy. Zinger is beginning to look a bit peaky feather wise but still laying like a pro I use VermX pellets in their food and give them Poultry Spice and put Davinova C in their water (they are also fond of a bit of pasta dressed in olive oil once a week!) Any tips or do I just let her get on with it? Best wishes to all and your girls. x
Egluntyne
You could give them some extra protein to help feather growth. Rinsed dolphin friendly tuna, organic cat food, chick crumbs, scrambled egg....all good sources.
nowaysaidlibby
hello, i have only had my chickens for 4 weeks and they haven't started laying yet. however at the moment they seem to be shedding a lot of feathers. is this usual considering their age? any help from 'eggsperienced' chicken owners would be appreciated! Christian
Davinova C should only be given for a short term to improve shell quality and not all the time. As Egluntine says, upping the protein will be good for them and help them feather up more quickly. 3 of mine are moulting at the moment, 2 are still laying every other day and one has stopped. I mix in poultry spice with their food as an extra suppliment. Seems crazy to be moulting now, but that is what hens do! Nowaysaidlibby - yes, they do moult from 19-21 weeks just before they start laying.
kirbyhouse
Hey Nowaysaidlibby - love the name Good luck with your girls. You will find everyone on here really helpful through every stage - good and bad. Not sure why they shed their feathers when they do - they are quite bizarre and totally wonderful. All the best Sal x
