Easy-peesy Christmas cake

Recommended Posts

- diddy ones made in baked bean, tuna & sweetcorn tins for my hampers!

Just had a moment of enlightenment of sorts - be very careful if you use tins which have been opened with a "cutting" can opener, by that I mean a can opener which literally slices the top from the tin, leaving a sharp edge to cut your hands on.

I have a Pampered Chef one, which breaks the seal between the top and the tin, therefore no sharp edges. It also takes the ring pull tops off neatly, even once the ring pull section has been removed. It has been worth every penny of the £16+ that it cost 3 years ago!!

Sorry that was an 'elf 'n' safety announcement, wouldn't like to think of the plaster companies making a mint due to diddy cake tins!

Wayhayhay  ! I have sold one of my diddy cakes!

I was talking to one of the volunteers at our local hospice this morning & told her I'd made them, & was planning to take a few to a craft fair next weekend, so had better get marzipan & icing them....and she said "save me one & let me know how much" !!

I went to a charity Christmas fair this afternoon & found similar sized cakes, with fruit & nut tops for £12+ - to say I was gobsmacked with that price is an understatement!!

Obviously I don't want to rip her off , but I have no idea where to finish with a selling price - well below £12 though!

Does anyone on here sell cakes or have any thoughts on pricing?

I am planning to take a selection of my jams, jellies and chutneys (and diddy cakes of course!) to this craft fair next Sunday and make up hampers in baskets to order. Apparently, no one else is doing anything like that & there are at least 2 other jewellery bods going to be there, which is my other passion. I didn't make a huge amount last year, but did quite well, I hope to repeat the experience this year!

I've just replied and left a link over on Penguinmad's thread, Sha...........

Although the £12 might look like a high price, it is important not to undersell your cakes. They will be far superior to supermarket and large bakery cakes and should be priced accordingly. People are happy to pay for quality!

Work out exactly how much they cost you to make - and allow for time and electricity. Make sure you at least cover these costs - how much you add as a profit is up to you and depends sometimes on the situation. Selling at a Craft Fair (to strangers) can demand a higher price than selling from a stall at a school fair of selling at some charity events.

Once you have set your price do not be ashamed to promote it - I used to feel guilty but after a while you come to decide that your time is worth as much as anyone elses and you are worth it!

Have fun! :D

Here is the link http://www.megrivers.com/ - these are artisan cakes and highly priced but they always get good reviews in all the local magazines and further afield as well. Base your prices on these more than supermarket prices - anyone who wants to pay supermarket prices can go .................

..........to a supermarket!

Yes Emma, you are right. If you put the icing on straght away I think you can get some colour bleeding through. I left mine marzipaned for a week to dry out.

I cant remember how long I baked the diddy cakes. I did them alongside a large one so would have been at the same temperature but for a shorter time. Just did the skewer test on them I think.
