My laptop just won't boot up. I get the blue screen of death which I've at last managed to get to hang around long enough to read .

 

I can sometimes get it to the log in screen but it always reverts to the blue screen.

 

It says:

 

Problem seems to be caused by following file: Beep.sys

 

PAGE_FAULT_IN_NON_PAGED_AREA

 

There is some Tech Info which means nowt to me .

 

FRED - ANYONE - , ARE YOU OUT THERE?

Slight complication is that my laptop was bought from work secondhand and I don't have a Windows XP Professional disk for it.

 

I do have Windows XP Home disk for the PC - anyone know if I can use that to boot up?

Right, get your Recovery CD (you do have a recovery cd - or your stuffed. Put recovery CD in CD drive, follow instructions. But you will lose all your data. So I hope you have backed up.

 

I also need the model number etc of your laptop.

I'm being a bit dim I know . What do you mean by "insert appropriate word here"? Do you mean my XP disk? Is the recovery CD the Windows CD?

 

I usually copy stuff to the external drive linked to my pc but can't remember when I last did it . I may have lost my holiday photos if it was a while ago. And my recent chicken photos .

The power of punctuation . "Your [insert appropriate word]" as opposed to "you're [insert appropriate word]".

 

Don't know why I'm laughing . I don't have a recovery disk for my laptop as I only really use it for the internet. Everything important is on the PC (except my holiday photos ).

 

Fred, can I use the Windows XP home disk to try to boot up? The laptop has XP Pro on it but I can probably get a disk from work tomorrow if necessary.

 

The laptop is an HP Compaq nx6310.

You can try the XP home disk, it might not work but try it anyway. In fact TRY IT NOW!

 

But don't touch anything!

Followed the instructions on the link from Scramble (thank you, thank you, thank you ). Bit nervewracking, copying system files onto a usb thingy, following prompts on safe mode with prompting (reminded me of the old DOS stuff which I had no clue about!) but IT WORKED

 

Can you tell I'm pleased . Kids thought I was mad, leaping about the house, screeching .

 

Anyway, thanks all . I'm copying my pictures onto my external drive as we speak . Next job, update everything, backup everything, make new recovery disks .

 

Do it now folks, you never know when it'll happen .
