pollenbird
Hello, My small fig tree has quite a few 'immature' baby figs on it. I know you're supposed to knock them off during the winter but can you eat them? It just seems a waste to feed them to the chickens or the compost heap Thank you in advance and have a good weekend! xx
Lesley
I thought the immature figs were next years crop?
Cinnamon
This interests me too. Hubby came back from the market with 2 little fig trees last weekend, both covered with big & small figs. We have potted them on into lovely chunky terracotta pots to go either side of the front door once the front patio is finished
LesleyH
I have a large fig tree, it always grows large figs but they never ripen - just stay white inside then rot. I have been told that they are male or female and one ripens and one never does...have no idea if its true!
pollenbird
hmmm...I think I could have been clearer on my original post... When I say immature, I meant about the size of a large walnut - I think the ones for next year are the little buds (about the size of a fingernail) and so we were supposed to knock these 'larger' baby figs off as they won't ripen over winter (Although I could be wrong ). I was just wondering if these are the time the 'teenager' figs are picked to make the baby figs, like the ones sold at Pizza Express (mmmm)? LesleyH - Sorry to hear about your rotten figs Maybe it has some kind of mould problem - that is a complete guess and probably heavily influenced by losing all my tomatoes to blight i shall investigate further and let you know if i find anything useful out!! Lesley
Ah! that's clearer now - I did wonder about the size of them but thought you'd come back and tell us.
