Mrs Webmuppet
Hi O Wise Ones, Our two apple trees (one Cox's Orange Pippin and one Fiesta) are laden with apples. My question is what to do with so many apples . I only have a small freezer so I can't freeze all of them. Suggestions please (and anything that I can give as Crimble pressies would be a bonus). Milly
One way to reduce a large heap of apples in moments is to juice them. The only problem is you need to drink it quite quickly as it starts going brown (although a touch of lemon juice slows the process if they are sweet enough to take it). You can in theory freeze the juice, but I haven't tried that. They keep well in the veg drawer in the fridge (but most people don't have space to spare) or in a cold place. Apple jelly is easy to make and you can add mint, rosemary, whatever, which would make a nice present. Milly
Snowy
Get an apple press and make cider! Lasts a lot longer than juice (in theory )
Mrs Webmuppet
Don't tempt Mr Webmuppet! Could I use them to make chutney or apple cheese?
Lesley
...they won't cook down like cooking apples
Mrs Webmuppet
I found a recipe that uses eating apples ( it also needs cooking apples) - french apple tart, it's a bit of a faff to make. I have all the component parts assembled I am just waiting for Mr Webmuppet to return from work with the flan tin I made him buy on his meal break. The rest of the apples I shall wrap in newspaper and store pending their fate ....if they are still ok at Chrsitmas I suppose I could pop some in the Christmas hampers ( along with some jerusalem artichokes, which I appear to have a glut of too)
