Valkyrie
We have had such a mixed week - sad news = my dad died on Wednesday and the docs and nurses at Basingstoke hospital are fantastic and did everything they could - so different from other places we have heard about . Glad news = Sioux laid her first egg and Moochoo was right with her prediction. Sad news = Sioux laid her egg in between the roosting bars after pottering in the nesting box and broke a little revealing a perfect little yolk inside. It was only just slightly damaged and there was also an enormous splodgy mess of yolk in the doorway but no sign of shell - it actually looked ready for an omelet! Don't think they ate it as we spotted Sioux going in the cube and although Apache ran in afterwards she wouldn't have had time to eat the whole thing . GLAD NEWS = Sioux ran into the cube and made a lovely little nest and laid an egg again yesterday, luckily OH was at hand and he went to rescue the egg. Nope, not in the nesting box, not in the roosting bars but on the floor underneath the door - luckily lots of aubiose broke the fall(?) and result was one perfect little bantam sized pale pink egg. Not like Cinnamon's green one though We think that the egg stuck to Sioux's botty fluff and only came off once she was on the move. Does she do the bok bok BOK? No it is that awful whingey noise!!! Bah humbug oh well can't have it all, but still OH is happy he now has his £350 egg at long last and we are all excited and keeping a close eye on Apache. We have also noted that Sioux lays at 12.30 so no eggs for brekkers but just right for lunch or brunch!

mostin
So sorry to hear about your dad, chickens are truly underated healers, I am sure they will help you through this difficult time. Congratulations on the eggs.
Valkyrie
Thankies Peeps, for all the hugs and good wishes. Life after dad is fine - we haven't stopped laughing (a few tears at first, but hardly any now). At the funeral we had the Goons doing the Ying Tong Song - which pretty much sums up my crazy family - and the Vicar enjoyed it too! And only now my brother has owned up to loads of things that he did and I got the blame for - I told mum it was him, little brat ! As everyone was at our house the girls were a big attraction, especially as they now have free range around the whole garden but spend quite a lot of time at the back door windows hoping for some sucker to pamper them (usually DD but this time it was my SIL's mum who misses having chickens ). No eggs today but come 12.30 we will be watching Sioux like hawks! Congratulations to all the newbie layers too - the laydies suddenly seem to have started all together haven't they. Ain't Nobody Here
I'm really sorry to hear about your dad - but it sounds like you have a great family and are coping brilliantly (laughter and chickens really are the best medicine ). Valkyrie
These hens are full of surprises - this morning I let them out and Sioux promptly dropped an egg out onto the bark! This time it's a softie and I don't even think she noticed!

Valkyrie
The poor bird keeps going back to look for her egg. I feel awful now - OH pinched it!! Her egg is pinker than Sioux's (more brown tinge), looks bigger, but they weigh the same at 1.5 ounces. We fried Sioux's and shared it between OH, DD, mum and myself, so it had to be almost solid (I so love the runny yolks - not long now).
