Kit
Hi Is it normal for a hen to lay more than one egg in a day? I have three hens, 2 Miss Pepperpots and 1 brown chestnut ranger. Thanks Kit

Ain't Nobody Here
I've had an egg and a softie in one day twice before.
helenmb
I have had this happen very occasionally and the extra one was layed somewhere in the run rather than in the nest box, almost as if it was a suprise and not part of their 'normal routine'. I think we didn't get one the next day though.
Kit
mmm makes sense...we only got two eggs today and 1 of them we watched Daisy lay it.... funny how maternal you can feel towards hens when they have laid an egg!! Kit

judith67
Yesterday my Sussex laid her usual morning egg and it was a whopping 91g, wouldnt fit in the egg carton. Then at about 6pm they wre wandering around the patio and she suddenly crouched down and laid an egg there and then. It was a softie, and the others ate it before we could move. She was obviously in shock as she put herself to bed then, but was fine this morning. I probably won't get one off her today now.
fowlbird
in Ireland we had 6 ex batts and they all laid 2 eggs each every day Blimey! yes, and as everyone had their own chooks we couldn't get rid of them - even the cats and dogs had to eat eggs... Judith, that's a whopper I'm surprised she could walk afterwards.
surferdog
I once had 5 eggs from 3 hens in one day. No idea what was going on but think it's when they've not long been laying and are getting into the swing of things. Hasn't happened since. Cuckoos Nest
This morning about mid morning all our four girls laid eggs Our first 4 egg day , so I was amazed when I let them out for afternoon free-ranging to find another perfect good sized egg (still warm) in the nest box . I too had always assumed it would be one egg per bird maximum. That brings our total to fifty eggs since 25th October, which we are well impressed with .
