nowaysaidlibby
hello! i've had my two gorgeous chickens for just over 4 weeks now. they're combs have turned a nice healthy red colour and they are moulting slightly. apparently these are both signs that the chickens are about to lay. are there anymore signs to look for? how soon should i expect eggs? please share your first egg stories too! Christian
When they start squatting for you, that is a definite sign - about a week until eggs for breakfast!
nowaysaidlibby
ahh i'll look out for that one. are their eggs usually smaller when they first start laying?
Valkyrie
Christian's right about the crouching and the timing (is he ever wrong! ) , Moochoo told me that too. Spot on Moochoo! But we didn't get the nice bok bok BOK sound - we had "WHAAAAAAAAH"! Lots of it!! We also had the same whingeing sound for a few days before too - I almost went spare trying to shush them before the neighbours whinged as well! Now Sioux has had a couple of successes it is old hat to her - she just does one very short and relatively quiet "whaah" and off she toddles. At the moment we have Apache whingeing all day and going back into the cube to see where the egg has gone and almost like "come and look, what the heck was that?" Still no to the bok boks, but they do little contented quiet ones when they find something tasty. At the moment the eggs look like bantam sized (considering my girls are huuuuge), and weigh 1.5 ounces each. I am hoping they will get a bit bigger, but they are sooo cute. Cheyenne has a way to go yet, but she is getting the hot flushes, so I imagine she will be starting in about 3/4 weeks.
Ain't Nobody Here
My 3 all squatted (with a cute little bum wiggle ) a week before they laid. And yes, the eggs tend to be smallish to start but soon get bigger .
kez
We've had our two girls for just over a week. We were told they were approx 22 weeks old and already laying. However, still waiting Melody looks like she's starting to moult. They both started crouching a couple of days ago when we go to pick them up. I'll keep my fingers crossed for them starting soon

nowaysaidlibby
ooh sounds promising dinkychick! today my two have been really aggressive towards eachother. could this be some kind of PMS for chickens? they usually get on quite well but they're ever so irratable today. perhaps i'm just desperately looking for more signs of eggs on the way haha! congrats on your 60g kez!
