Spotting scopes?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

Can anyone advise me please?

My garden backs onto a 15 hectare field with a forest and lake at the bottom. We have a lot of wild life including things like deer, herons, hunting birds, lynx, hares, woodpeckers and loads of other birds that I would love to be able to see better and identify.

What I am looking for is a good, middle price range, spotting scope. I just can't get on with binoculars and it's more difficult 'cos I wear glasses!

I have looked on e bay but I haven't a clue what I'm looking for in terms of spec. and it wouldn't mean any thing to me anyway.........soooo, has anyone got one, would you recommend it and if so, what is it?

[ Having trawled thru e bay and moaned that I couldn't understand it, the OH said, 'Well, I don't know why you didn't ask the forum straight away, you know someone will know something and you wouldn't have wasted so much time  ] [He was watching motor racing :roll: ]

I know almost nothing, but my OH is a very keen photographer and knows about lenses etc. What I have picked up over the years from him is:

1. the higher the magnification the more light you need to enter the lenses (in this case the

scope) or everything will be too dark to see

2. poor quality lenses may give chromatic and barrel distortion so you won't be able to see the image properly

3. with high magnification it is hard to hold the image steady, especially if the binocs are big.

So, I would go for a lower magnification and a higher quality make (like getting the bottom of the range Milele versus the top of the range Hotpoint!!!).

My other thought is to go into Jessops or the like and try out lots of scopes and see what you think. Then go back home and get onto eBay!
