alison
Hi all, I have at present got my bags of corn, grain etc stored in one of those large Keter plastic chests, alongside the diatom, verm x , grit etc, next to my pen. I have been told that rats can chew through plastic to get to the grain, and as I have seen evidence of rats tunneling under the paving stones and picket fence, they are present. I don't want to set traps because of my Burmese cats. who are very nosey! I have therefore bought a galvanised bin with lid. Can I mix everything up and store it as a 'ready made' feed, ie, bokashi, grit, diatom, garlic powder and pellets? It would make it easy for whomever is going to feed my chickens when I am in Saudi Arabia next week. Would I need to line the bin with anything or can I just pour the lot in and mix? Thank you
The Dogmother
You can just bung it all in and mix it. The galvanised bins are best if you have rats around.
..lay a little egg for me
The only problem with bunging it all in is that the different sized particles may start to organize themselves like in a packet of muesli with all the big bits on top and the powders at the bottom, so I would imagine you might need to give it all another stir from time to time! The Dogmother
I pre-mix mine in 1 litre wide-necked plastic containers and then give it a shake before pouring it into the feeders.
Mutrix Farmers
I use a galvanised bin but the different food items are in their own bags or boxes. It would be difficult to shake the bin to mix it all up.
eggalp
I have thought about a big metal bin for food storage. At the moment the food is on the garage floor in big brown paper sacks, but i too am worried about rats etc. Does the food not go damp if its left outside in the bin?
