Louisdog
Just wondering, is there much difference between these two types? The Miss Pepperpot looks to be larger and to lay larger eggs, is that true? Which is most placid?
Eggstatic!
My Miss Pepperpot lays the larger eggs generally but one of my gingernut has given us three large double yolkers! The same gingernut is the friendliest of the three that i have got (two gingernuts and one pepperpot), she loves sneeking in the conservatory and sitting on the table or sofa! Louisdog
Lol I love the thought of a hen sat on the sofa Is there much difference between their size, is the Miss Pepperpot larger? Someone told me that Pepperpots lay for more years too but I can't remember what thread I saw it on now.
Purplemaniacs
Our first two girls were a Miss Pepperpot and a Gingernut Ranger. The Pepperpot was always bigger but the Gingernut is the friendlier but they are both friendly. The Pepperpot's eggs are larger by about 10g normally in the low 70g s but she has laid one over 100g, the Gingernut's are about 60g. The Pepperpot lays almost everyday, had about 10 days off when she went broody but other than that she is our best layer, lovely large dark brown eggs. The Gingernut lays brown speckled eggs, sadly ours has stopped laying about two weeks ago, seemed a bit under the weather not really sure what was the matter with her, but up until then she laid most days. The Gingernut is my favourite (not that I have a favourite ). Chrissie
Egluntyne
I've always found the gingernuts to be friendlier than the pepperpots.
Guest
My ginger is the friendliest - but has a tendency to go broody a lot. My pepper is a funny little thing who just loves digging - anything, anywhere - anytime!! They are about the same size and I usually get an egg each a day - except when shes gone flipping broody again! They stick together and are the best of pals.......my ginger panics if she can't see her firend! Louise
eggscombobulated
We have had our chickens over a week now and when they are of the run we often pick them up, my son and I. However the 2 pepperpots are decidedly not keen on this! The 3 gingernuts seem to like a cuddle and a chat. Will the pepperpots always be like this - reserved?! Would love to know....... Looney
We have two gingers and they are both friendly. Never had a pepperpot though so can't compare! You'll probably find they all have individual characteristics, one of ours is friendlier than the other!
Old Speckled Hen
My Gingernut is slightly smaller than my Black Rock (is that the same as a Miss Pepperpot? or maybe I'm mistaken) and is definitely the friendlier and the more clever. She's the one who worked out the cat flap!!!! I have had to replace it with one that reads a microchip so that the cat can use it.
Louisdog
Sounds like the gingers may be friendlier but the peppers better layers then, but they both sound lovely DA I cannot believe that your chook can work a catflap they are cleverer than we think
The Ives Clan
We have both but our Miss Pepperpot is a lovely girl. She follows you all round the garden and is very friendly and has beautiful markings. Our Gingernut is still very wary of us. She will feed out your hand but will only let you touch her when it's time for bed. Can't comment on the eggs as our Gingernut Ranger has not laid as yet. We also have a speckled hen and a white star. The white star is very clever - you can almost see her think!!!!!!!!!!! She was the first out to freerange when the time came and also worked out how to get on top of our 8 foot high pagoda What ever you decide to go with they will bring hours of enjoyment
Louisdog
We have a white star too but I don't think ours is very clever! Although she can be, when we want to catch her Does anyone know what the Omlet chickens actually are? I know they are a type of hybrid, and my new book has a chapter on all the different ones, I wonder if for example the Pepperpot is actually a Black Rock or a Hebden Black, and the gingernut is a Calder Ranger or something? Not that it makes much difference, I was just curious.
quickcluck
well both my ginger and pepperpot (fenning black) are bot very friendly, but the ginger lays more regularly, and had larger eggs.
Looney
I think the Gingernuts are Rhode Island x Light Sussex
jlo
...and I think that the Pepperpots are Maran and Rhode Island. I have one of each. Miss started off as top chook but GR then got much more canny and is the one who gets the nest box now. GR is much more likely to try new foods. She is also slightly more independent than Miss . The latter will willingly crouch whereas GR has to be in the mood to do so. Love 'em both though!
Patricia7455
Does anyone know where Omlet source their chickens, or do they hatch and raise them themselves? The breeders seem to call their hybrids by different names, although they seem to be similar hens.
Seagazer
My pepper is friendly and was the most inquisitive to begin with. She does however make more noise, not very loud but she sort of moans the whole time. Her eggs are smaller than my two gingers. Hers have never been bigger that 60g whilst the first ginger to lay goes up to 70g. The last one has only been laying a little while but hers are already up to 64g. Flo the first laying ginger is very friendly, always comes straight over and will follow me around all the time. The other ginger is a lot shyer than both the others. I think it probably just depends on the chicken
Hen Watch
Both are friendly but I think my Gingers are more so and my Miss P is a little more skittish and shy. I find that my Miss P has a sleeker, thinner look to her feathering and she looks smaller than the 2 Gingers (although is the same age). I found both laid pretty similar sized eggs with the Gingers marginally larger but not enough to notice. But recently all of them have packed up laying so I wonder now if at 2 years old they've reached the hen equivalent of the menopause. They are knocking out softies very infrequently and eating them and no amount of limestone will correct it, so I think they are heading for "free loader" status. kez
My Pepperpot is slightly bigger than my Gingernut. They are both really friendly, but it's always the Gingernut who runs up to me for a cuddle first. My Pepperpot lays nearly every day - usually 60g eggs. My Gingernut lays every other day 60 - 65g. The Pepperpot gets worried when the Gingernut is somewhere where she shouldn't be - like on the fence . But its the Pepperpot who likes to sneak into the kitchen when I'm not looking. They are such characters - I wish we'd got chickens years ago. They are very good for releaving stress
Sandychick
My pepperpot and gingernut lay an egg every day - they haven't missed a day for 2 months now. They are both really friendly but the gingernut is the boldest and the noisy one! I love my pepperpot as she is so quiet and polite campared to the gingernut! She is just so well mannered for a chicken. That might sound a bit mad but she does stuff like eat the pellets from the ground that the others have thrown everywhere, sort of clearing up after them. All three of them have very different characters and I wouldn't change anything about any of them......love 'em to bits!
Louisdog
I love how chickens all have different characters; to my hubby they are just chickens, and friends think I am mad naming them and thinking of them all as individuals ... but we know we're right don't we? The breeders or suppliers whose websites I have looked at have similar looking birds but with different names, Not, as you say, that it makes much difference, What is your book with the chapter on all the different ones? please. jill the potter
As far as I know - well what the breeders told me - is that the Ginernuts are called Warrens and Mrs P's are Black rocks, and both are hybrids. I have one of each and the ginernut is far more friendly than the black rock, who is really, really very timid and makes so much noise when you try to get near her you would think you were trying to do her some harm. It's taken 6 weeks for her to start to take things out of my hand and then only something really nice like a grape or their favourite, cherry tomatoes - it's a good thing we still have some growing!!!!!! It's so funny to see them chasing each other with a little tomato in their beaks - would make a good picture for red nose day!!!! Had an egg every day for the past three weeks only small about 53 gms each. Pretty certain that it's Korma who lays them, and then yesterday we had a whopper 79 gms!!! so dont know whether this was Tikkas first effort or just a blip. Until I get two eggs on one day I wont be certain the both are laying really. Can't wait for the time I dont have to buy any eggs!!!! badgerbluebadger
I love both of mine but Ella is quite happy to be picked up and is more interested in me when I come into the garden. I checked the omlet booklet:- is a Rhode Island Red/Light Sussex cross is a Rhone Island Red/Maran cross I am still awaiting my first egg but would like to know what colour eggs each one has so I know when hen has laid what - can anyone provide pictures? Thanks Jo
