Brooding Beauty

Recommended Posts

As I said in my last post, Beauty isn`t poorly. She`s Broody again! She`s only been laying for about three weeks since the last time.

I had to keep turfing her out of the nest box all yesterday. When I had a good look at her I found a great bare patch on her breast and downy feathers in the nest. In the end I put a pack of ice cubes in there. She put up with it for an hour or so then came out and scratched around as normal. She seems normal this morning, hasn`t tried to go in the nest box at all - but she hasn`t laid.

Do some chickens go broody more than others? Will this happen over and over again?

Poor little thing - she`s only about 30 weeks old at most.

does being broody mean her feathers come out?? sorry for my ignorance...

great idea abaout the ice cubes to encourage her to get out....

It's moulting when their feathers fall out.

Broody is when they sit in a next box/corner and sit like they are on a nest.

Some can pull out underneth feathers when broody to get their body heat closer to the eggs. At this time of year though it could also be the start of a moult - my moulting girl is sitting in the nesting box in this weather some of the time during the day feeling sorry for herself.
