gemmcd
Well they arrived at 10am this morning and we now have 3 bright and sparky girls called Tess, Gabriella and Dory. The kids have loved it and all was going well - til bedtime. We could not get them to bed! We tried treats but they weren't interested (any suggestions on favourites?) we put a torch in at dusk but still not interested. So my 8 yr old son crawled into the run and tried to herd them into the house, except Tess managed to wiggle past him in the opposite direction and before you could blink was out! Disaster - it was getting dark fast and we had a chicken loose on it's first day having been told they need to stay in run for 5 days! Well we tried everything and then it went into thick bushes and we lost it. I was in disbelief day one and it was nearly night and we had a chicken almost prone to be fox food now. I was wading in but being a pepperpot it was near impossible! Then amazingly I heard some rustling and pulled apart some branches and there she was sitting in this bush. I picked her up and gave her a cuddle for about 5 mins before putting her in the run. By now it was really dark and they were still not in so I crawled in with daughter shutting the gate behind me and trying hard not to kneel on poo had to physically pick each one up and carry them in! In all it was scary at the time but funny (now we know she is safely tucked up!) to think of us running around trying to catch this chicken! And so my life with chickens begins.... GreenGirl
welcome to the new, great fun addiction you will soon wonder what you did with your time BC (before chooks). I had an escapee in the first week, who freaked out being on the wrong side of the wire, ran round and round the run for 30minutes before finding the door following a long trail of mealworms as KK says, so it begins
badgerbluebadger
For the first two nights I had to get in the run, pick up the little beggers and put them in their . The third night I left a touch in the and they got the message and went to bed. The forth night I used the touch and just shone it in the and they went in. After this they have put themselves to bed. The main thing is dont worry I have had my girls just over two weeks and it get better as you learn your way to do things!
