Good wishes needed for little Åsa - she's at the vets now...

Recommended Posts

Update time!! Åsa has been back to the vets this morning for her dressing to be redone and is doing well....she's getting quite used to it all now. She wasn't keen on the idea of an injection again, but she was a brave, little soldier... Rachel, the veterinary nurse, and Åsa are now on first name terms, as you can see from the photograph below. Åsa actually started to doze off in her arms! I think she was quite put out when I brought her home to the other chickens. Rachel's mum keeps chickens and it sounds as if she is a potty as we are about them - I told her that she should join the forum.

Anyway, she has to go back on Monday for her dressing to be checked, and from tomorrow mum and dad are looking after the girls because I will be in Sweden so fingers crossed!

PS one of the senior partners with Northlands vets keeps chickens, so even if my local practice doesn't automatically know the answer, they can call her and get advice, so I'd definitely recommend them.

Also when Åsa went in on Monday for her bad leg, they said they don't get many chickens in, then later that day they had another lame chicken, fortunately not a break in her case though!

Just a quick update....Åsa went to the vet yesterday and she seemed so well they didn't change the dressing.

She seemed to be trying to put her foot down to balance herself...then today I was cleaning out the Eglu (I'd let them out for the first time to do this and she hopped and skipped and flapped about), and found the bic biro splint lying there....she'd managed to lose it. So we had to scoop her up and take her back at lunchtime....they have put some new splints in, this time using the wooden sticks which hubby brought back from Volvo. They thought it was healing well, even though the bone seems to be healing with a slight twist to it, but I think she will be fine in time (fingers crossed)

She is getting to be a very well travelled Chicken - we are going back tomorrow so that they can check her foot to make sure it's not swelling....:wink:

I thought I'd update you on little Åsa (wish I could work out how to update the title, each time I try to change it, nothing happens!)

She's doing well, so well that we haven't taken her back for a few days, we've been checking her a couple of times a day to make sure there's no swelling/heat and that the splints haven't come out - she's trying to put her foot down to steady herself and seems to be on the mend, so fingers crossed!

Here she is with hubby checking her out....

She looks so resigned to all the handling now  . i'm glad she's able to put some weight on it now, but it's not so fahionable now it's not bright green  .

Oh, this lot of bandages has little pawprints on, so she's still ok with it....fortunately my cats are scared of the chickens or they may have taken them as an invitation!:wink:
