First Egg; in the poo tray

Recommended Posts

Some one has laid an egg, not sure who. I went to clean out the poo trays and there is one small broken egg in the poo tray and one small but perfectly formed one. Its now washed and displayed in the kitchen. The poo tray was last emptied on Sunday PM so it must be recent, just not sure who did it.

My girls free range all day and rarely go back to the mother ship (Cube). So it must have happened at night. All the girls are between 20 and 22 weeks. Any way of telling who it is?

I always imagined them sitting in the nesting box to lay not in the roosting area. Is this normal?

The shell was quite hard so they must be eating well!

Is it ok to eat eggs that have been sitting among a load of chicken s**t. Mother in law is coming to stay in a couple of days may give it to her! (love her really).

When Ebony started to lay she used to lay on the roosting bars and the eggs often fell through into the poo tray, we still ate them. But I did not wash them, just wiped them. I think washing them allows bacteria to get into the egg.

Are any of your girls crouching if so that could be the one who has laid.

Thanks Chrissie,

didn't know about not washing them.

Would the girl in questions poo be different, Tallulah's has reddy/brown bits in it? Never thought I would spend my spare time looking at chicken poo. She is at the bottom of the pecking order and isn't allowed in the nesting box at night, so is the ideal candidate for laying on the roosting bars.
