Old Speckled Hen
Is that like "Greek port" ? it's a sweet red wine, not quite as strong as port. If you like sweet wines, try Commandaria, that's really nice too. You might only be able to get it in Greece/Cyprus etc though You can get Mavro in the supermarket though Thanks for that. I do enjoy a sweet wine with puds. Thank heavens the Greeks do something to make up for the travesty, Retsina ...YUK
Cate in NZ
Oh, this thread has just brought back some memories. My Dad used to be a keen home wine-maker, and he loved to share his wine with his family. Some of his attempts were stunning, really fantastic wines .....and a few were probably more suitable as drain cleaners . Opening a bottle was always an adventure . After I'd left home every time I went back to visit my parents I'd leave with a bottle or 2 clunking away beside me....and I always loved recieving them. Dad just got so much pleasure from making them and sharing them that I felt fairly, errrm, privileged I suppose, to be asked to take some. cordelia
sweet of you for all the posts!! chicken anne, we made lemon and ginger wine...(had to get lemons from Tesco...think they thought i was mad buying so many...) our recipe also had sultanas in it.... however it was a bit...eye watering....(at testing stage you understand) so we looked for another recipe, and found that after all the wine process had finished (to a 5 gallon glass thingy)...you added a whole bottle of brandy....!! ..it improved soooo much after that LOL But you hdd to be careful driving...I do meant the next day, as it was so strong... I liked all the ideas about making the gifts more special, with mulled wine spices, thanks for that.. we used old fahioned brown luggage labels, which gave a rustic type effect...as the wine labels we used first of all, didnt look right.. but I think we will just be a little more careful who we gift... We might think we are giving a great present, but others obviously think we are being cheap !! My best friends father made every imaginable country wine when I was young, and gave us tastes....unfortunately they made lots of wine, so sometimes we had three or four tastes and athey were very strong... Plum was great...but pea pod wine...wasnt a good year...or parsnip...shudders.... Plum and peach....mmmmmmmmmmmm
chickenanne
Ooh, my lemon and ginger has sultana's in it, too, forgot about that bit! ....will remember to water it down with a bottle of brandy..! It's still fermenting enthusiastically, after about 4 weeks.
Yorkshire Pudding
My OH's grandad used to make wine out of anything and everything and it was always tested on the family. MIL remembers various vintages that were wonderful, but teabag wine didn't go down too well! My Dad once made apple wine but the demijohn and top didn't fit very well, wasps found it and when he went to have a look one afternoon there were more wasps in it than wine. I love homemade gifts - my sons make choc truffles for their teachers every year too, and each year the other teachers are jealous because they don't have one of my boys in their class and miss out on the truffles. People generally do appreciate the effort that goes into something homemade; if your sister can't see that then she deserves to miss out on your lovely wine! cammy73
Me, being the type of person that I am would have taken it back off them if I'd have seen them sniggering and told them not to expect anymore!! I can't Stand people like that...they make me sooooo angry If you don't like or want something then say so....don't accept things for the sake of it.... Guest
our fist batch of wine is ready viewtopic.php?f=20&t=35321 we've tested it and it's very nice. We'll probably give a few bottles to friends this year but only those who will appreciate the thought and will be honest (to our faces) about what they think of it!
