emmaw298
Was horrified to find a big pink fleshy lump of something in the droppings tray today! About the size of an irregular golf ball, it was smooth and almost looked like a piece of undercooked chicken!!! I immediately felt the need to chop into it and investigate further. It appeared to have a number of layers of fleshy stuff and some layers were hard and shell-like, a large dark red blob and lots of small round cyst like deposits throughout. I was almost convinced that one of them had somehow expelled a tumour but after a quick search on here I'm wondering if it was lash? All hens appear ok but one of them has lost quite a bit of weight recently and they have just finished a course of flubenvet (incase that was why the one was losing weight). They get limestone flour every day but there has also been a dip in egg numbers recently which I put down to the winter weather but if it is lash, then does this mean that one of them has had an infection? (which would also explain the weight loss and egg reduction)
Christian
Sounds like a lash to me. Just a blip in the system. As long as they look ok tomorrow, I wouldn't worry

Redwing
Whats a Lash please? have googled it and searched on here but nothing is coming up. It sounds horrible!
emmaw298
according to egluntine (who lets face it knows everything about chickens) its a 'clearing out of the laying tackle' which can happen once in a while and may follow infection. interestingly I have just flubenveted mine and i've since read someone else's post that they also experienced a 'lash' after worming theirs so maybe there is a link there..? anyway it basically looks like a hard irregular lump of pinky fleshy chicken meat - gross!!! i searched in the chicken clinic for 'lash' and it brought up a number of previous posts
Redwing
ewwwww! thanks for that, I bet that gave you a start, I would have thought the chicken was turning inside out if I had seen one of those! Mine are on Flubenvet at the moment so will be checking the poo tray extra carefully tomorrow. Thanks for your useful info, I have just tried the search again and can only find 5 results, all on this thread but then I am not very technical so am obviously doing something wrong! Glad everything was ok for your girl
Jules.
I've only had one lash that I've seen so far, & it was "laid" in the nest box

emmaw298
does anyone know the biological reason for it happening? and what the lash is actually made out of and why? mine looked as though it has lots of immature eggs in it and I would be really interested to know a bit more about why it happens (weird, I know! ) i've tried googling it (lash/chicken health lash/poultry lash) but I am getting really random things back and none of them related to what I want!
