peanut12
I had to dispatch my first hen this morning. Slim shady, our top hen, had gone lame and could not stand. Kindest thing to do was get it over with, so with the help of an experienced dispatcher, that was the end. I was surprised at the strength needed to do the deed, considering they are such little animals. Another is looking a bit peeky so we're keeping an eye on her. Guess it's only to be expected given the harsh conditions they spent the first 16 months of their life in. We're now down to 8 of the original 10 ex-batts, but have added 3 Black Rocks and 2 magpies to the flock. (nearly said stock ) Then had an email from a colleague at school panicking that we have Avain Flu on the premises. Fingers crossed for our poorly lady

Gamebird
Sorry to hear about Slim Shady. It's never an easy decision to make and it takes courage to do the deed yourself. At least her last days were spent in freedom.
